A Wonderful First Instrument
For many younger students, a full-sized guitar can feel a little overwhelming. The ukulele offers a wonderful introduction to music.
Its smaller size, lighter weight and four-string design help students develop coordination, rhythm and confidence without struggling with a larger instrument. Many students spend six to eight months learning the ukulele before moving on to the guitar, making the transition feel much more natural. Of course, many students fall in love with the ukulele and continue playing it for years.
There isn’t a right or wrong choice. Only the one that’s right for you.
Music Wherever Life Takes You
One of the biggest advantages of the ukulele is that it fits into everyday life.
Take it on holiday.
Carry it to college.
Bring it to a friend’s house.
Play around a campfire.
Relax on your balcony after work.
Join family gatherings.
Because it’s lightweight and compact, you’re far more likely to pick it up regularly—and that’s one of the biggest secrets to improving as a musician.
Music doesn’t always belong on a stage.
Sometimes it simply belongs wherever life takes you.
How We Teach
Every lesson is built around The First Chord Method™. Rather than following a rigid syllabus, we teach the student sitting in front of us.
Lessons are personalized according to your age, interests, goals and learning style. Some students simply want to play songs with friends. Others want to accompany themselves while singing. Some hope to transition to the guitar later. Others discover that the ukulele is all they’ll ever need.
Whatever your goals may be, we’ll help you develop the musical skills and confidence to enjoy playing for years to come. Because learning music should never feel like homework. It should feel like something you look forward to.
The First Chord Difference™
Many people think the ukulele is just a “beginner’s instrument.” We don’t.
At The First Chord, we see it as one of the most enjoyable and accessible ways to begin making music. That’s why we teach music through the songs you love. As your confidence grows, you’ll naturally develop rhythm, chord changes, timing and musical understanding—all while playing real songs from the very beginning. Some students continue with the ukulele for years. Others use it as a stepping stone to the guitar.
Either way, our goal remains the same: To help you become a confident, independent musician who enjoys making music for life.

Have a favourite artist or song?
Bring it along.
If it can be played on the ukulele, we’ll help you learn it.
International Music Certifications (Optional)

For students who enjoy a more structured learning path, we also prepare students for internationally recognised music examinations.
These certifications can help students:
- Build strong musical foundations
- Improve technique
- Develop confidence
- Track their progress
- Achieve recognised musical milestones
Exams are completely optional. Many students simply learn because they love making music—and that’s exactly how music should be. We’ll support whichever path you choose.
Do I Need My Own Ukulele?
Not immediately. We provide ukuleles during lessons, so you can experience the instrument before purchasing your own. As you continue learning, we do recommend having a ukulele at home so you can practice regularly and enjoy playing outside of class.
Whether you own a soprano, concert or tenor ukulele, we’ll help you get started. If you’re unsure which one to buy, we’ll happily recommend an instrument based on your age, comfort and budget.
The most important thing isn’t owning the perfect ukulele. It’s owning one that inspires you to keep playing.
Performance Opportunities
Music is meant to be shared.
Students at The First Chord have opportunities to perform as part of our student showcase series,
The First Stage™
These performances aren’t competitions.
They’re celebrations.
A chance to perform in front of family and friends, build confidence, overcome stage fright and celebrate the progress you’ve made.
Whether you’re performing your first two-chord song or a more advanced arrangement, every performance is a milestone worth celebrating.
Because…
Every Musician Starts Somewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ukulele easier than the guitar?
The ukulele has fewer strings, a smaller body and is often more comfortable for beginners, especially younger students. Rather than asking which instrument is “better,” we encourage students to choose the one that best suits their goals. Many students begin with the ukulele before progressing to the guitar later. Others continue enjoying the ukulele for many years.
Do I need any previous experience?
Not at all. Our lessons are designed for complete beginners as well as students who have learnt before and would like to improve.
Am I too old to learn?
Never.
The ukulele is enjoyed by children, teenagers, adults and retirees around the world. If you’ve always wanted to learn, today is a great time to begin.
Can I choose the songs I want to learn?
Absolutely. We believe learning should be enjoyable.
We’ll help you develop the necessary skills while using the songs you genuinely enjoy listening to and playing.
How much should I practice?
Even 15–20 minutes of focused practice each day can make a significant difference. Consistency is always more valuable than practicing for hours once a week.
Can I move to the guitar later?
Absolutely.
