Why We Sometimes Recommend Learning Acoustic Guitar First

If you’re passionate about learning the bass, we’ll happily help you begin your journey. However, for complete beginners, we may sometimes recommend spending six to eight months learning some acoustic guitar first.

Why?

Because understanding rhythm, chord progressions and song structure makes becoming a bassist much easier. You’ll recognize chord changes naturally, understand what the guitarist is playing and develop stronger musical instincts before stepping into the role of supporting an entire band.

It’s not a requirement. It’s simply the path we believe gives many beginners the strongest musical foundation. And if you’re certain that bass is your instrument from day one… We’ll start there.

Exams are completely optional. Many bass players simply learn because they enjoy performing and playing with others. Both paths are equally valuable.

Do I Need My Own Bass Guitar?

Yes. Unlike some of our other programmes, students are encouraged to bring their own bass guitar. Having your own instrument helps you practice consistently and become familiar with its feel and setup.

A bass amplifier is available during lessons at The First Chord. As you continue learning, we recommend investing in your own amplifier for regular practice at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bass guitar easier than the guitar?

Not necessarily.

While the bass has fewer strings than a guitar, being a great bassist requires excellent timing, listening skills and the ability to work closely with the drummer and the rest of the band.

It’s a different role—not an easier one.

Do I need previous musical experience?

Not at all.

If you’re passionate about learning bass, we’ll help you build the skills from the ground up.

In some cases, we may recommend beginning with a few months of acoustic guitar to build rhythm and chord awareness before moving to bass.

Can I learn on a 5-string bass?

Absolutely.

Most beginners start on a 4-string bass, but if you already own a 5-string instrument or wish to explore extended-range playing, we’ll happily teach you on that as well.

Can I choose the songs I want to learn?

Of course.

How much should I practise?

Even 20 minutes of focused practice each day can make a noticeable difference.
