Overview of the Harmonium Syllabus

The Harmonium Classes at The First Chord Music & Art School provides students with a well-rounded learning experience, covering the fundamentals of this versatile instrument used in Indian classical, devotional, and folk music. The course starts with an introduction to the harmonium’s history, structure, and role in various musical traditions. Students will learn the basics of finger positioning, posture, and hand coordination to build a solid technical foundation.

The syllabus focuses on essential music theory, introducing scales (Sargam), ragas, and chord structures. Students will practice playing traditional Indian ragas and compositions, developing their ability to play melodies with precision and emotion. Alongside melody, the syllabus covers accompaniment techniques, helping students learn how to support vocal performances or other instruments in both classical and contemporary settings.

As students advance, improvisation skills will be introduced, allowing for creative expression within the framework of ragas. Ear training exercises will enhance the ability to recognize notes and melodic phrases by ear, while composition techniques will encourage students to create their own musical pieces blending traditional and modern elements.

By the end of the course, students will have gained the ability to play and compose harmonium music confidently, understand the intricacies of Indian ragas, and perform with skill in both solo and ensemble settings.
